Business intelligence can be very useful when it comes to gathering, providing access to, and analyzing data to assess and improve the efficiency of any company. Generally, it refers to the variety of applications and technologies that allow comprehensive knowledge of all factors affecting certain business. And it can be quite beneficial to any company to gain knowledge and deeper understanding of the factors that influence its functioning.

Basically, business intelligence would improve the timeliness and quality of information within an organization. It usually reveals such factors the changes of customer behavior and spending patterns, current capabilities of the business and the trends occurring in the market.

Within our business, business intelligence will fulfill the following roles: eliminating a lot of guesswork, enhancing the communication among departments and resulting in smooth coordination of activities, enabling the company to respond quickly to changes in the external environment, financial conditions, customer preferences, etc. Basically, it must simply result in the overall performance improvement since the company would be able to make decisions based on the timely accurate information.

Business intelligence can provide the company with the following information: trends in the marketplace, demands of customers, daily overview of the internal work of the business, and other. Thus, good software must be able to perform such functions as integrating multiple data sources, enriching data and building complex business analytics, delivering reports, exploring data to discover patterns and apply them to business operations, efficient data warehousing.

Many business intelligence applications require specific hardware and software. In order to solve these problems, most business intelligence companies have chosen to provide its customers with comprehensive services, including not only the product itself, but its installation, training, trouble shooting and all software and hardware necessary to run their products.

Some of the major vendors include IBM, more or less globally operating company providing industry’s most advanced information technologies (computer systems, software, networking systems, storage devices, microelectronics) and the most integrated approach (IBM.Com, 2007). SAP, dominating the global market for enterprise software used by companies to manage customer relationships, partner collaboration, supply chains and business operations, is another major provider of business intelligence products, mainly tailored to industries such as chemicals or financial services, and lately – to niche industries (SAP.Info, 2007). One more vendor which deserves attention of business intelligence user is ORACLE, the proven leader of business applications whose products are usually quite successful and award-wining, and whose main competitive advantages include standards-based development, single-data model and native service-oriented architecture. Its products include applications technology, corporate performance and customer relationship tools, financial management and human capital, supply chain management and other (ORACLE.Com, 2007). As for the globally famous Microsoft, its highly successful products have won the strong reputation for high performance and being relatively easy to use. Microsoft provides a powerful business intelligence platform (Microsoft SQL Server) which is delivered to the masses through the company’s own software – Microsoft Office (Microsoft.Com, 2007). All vendors mentioned above provide leading services and groundbreaking products and it is up to individual businesses to decide which of those would benefit their company the most with the regard to the specific features of their industries, internal operations and goals.
