Medical School Admission Essay


I care for people and have a broad interest in medicine and modern biotechnology. Medicine is to a higher degree becoming connected to biotechnology and the development of novel pharmaceuticals. Still, there is a requirement for psychological care and professional behavior. Fundraising is perhaps the single most important factor in modern health systems. The possibility to develop medical tools, methods, drugs and facilities is highly dependent on research being funded by sources with capital. A keen understanding of research, the biotech industry, fundraising and an excessive wish to cure and care are key components for a medical doctor to succeed in the field. So is my portfolio reflecting these skills?

Yes! – The following section will introduce you to three primary experiences related to: 1) Biotech industry and medical research, 2) Fundraising and 3) Human care.

1. The biotech industry and medical research. I believe that one of the most appealing factors about related to the field of medicine is the possibility to conduct research. Biogen Idec is a biopharmaceutical with successful drugs on the market and several products in clinical development. Personally, I have been two summers at Preclinical and Clinical Development Sciences and Quality Control Laboratories at Biogen Idec. Here, I experienced the work flow and procedures in a modern biotech company and successfully accomplished the work of a general lab technician. I concluded that research is not just conducting experiments in the laboratory and that academic education in the world of research and development is not just theoretical. A researcher plans experiments, conduct experiments, raise funds, and should in many cases be an excellent leader and organizer. In addition, drugs and development of drugs has to fulfill a wealth of requirements (e.g. production under GMP/GLP, has to be tested endotoxin negative, etc.). However, even researchers in industrial companies require funding, either from external or internal sources.

2. As a youth volunteer coordinator at Care International, I coordinated fundraising activities for Indian Earthquake and Flood Relief Fund. Care International is a world wide non-profit organization. My involvement resulted in a total amount of $25,000 and $35,000 raised for the earthquake and flood victims respectively. In addition, a walkathon was organized to help the families of the September 11 tragedy victims. This event resulted in 300 active participants and over $15,000 raised. By coordinating these actions, I have achieved invaluable experience in modern fundraising. This is in particular in relation to help and care to people in painful situations. I feel highly committed to this kind of work. Here it would be obvious to draw a parallel to the study and practice of modern medicine. I sincerely know that my participation as a medical doctor will make a difference.

3. Linking to the fundraising is my present work at University of Massachusetts Hospice Volunteer Worcester. Here, I have assisted patients in various issues including companionship, preparing meals, reading, etc. Furthermore, I have been doing different administrative and practical tasks at the hospital. It is frustrating not to be able to connect my interests in biotechnology, medicine and social work to a higher level. To accomplish such a link, I need training as a medical doctor.

I hope that this admission essay have given you the impression that I have been enrolled in some of todays most important factors within the field of medicine, namely biotechnology/pharma, fundraising as well as training in social human care. The intension with the study at medical school will be to link together these important fields. As we are living in a world of highly specialized people with so many separate fields of expertise, linking is probably the single most important key to success.
