First Surrealist Manifesto


Surrealist Manifesto cannot be easily summarized in just a few words. It argues against some of the most fundamental notions held by our society, such as absolute reliance on logic, and application of logical reasoning to human experience in order to solve some of the common problems. The manifesto also supports the ideas that are commonly rejected in our Western world, such as superstition or myth. This situation is due to the fact that because of Freud's theories the general public has begun to show interest in the depths of the mind and explore new ways of dealing with common experiences by recognizing that there are more forces influencing human behavior below the surface of the mind than we have used to believe.

Freud has shown specific interest in human dreams that have caused the rise of unusual curiosity and discussion around the topic although the dreams itself have flickered human interest for ages. However, nobody in the Western world before Freud has neither paid due attention to this problem, nor considered human dreams important enough to be studied and explained on the scientific level. Since dreams have a huge effect on people and all of us similarly find the experience of dreaming and awakening highly fascinating, it can be speculated that dreams, perhaps, have no less importance than the conscious state of being awake, or should be considered just as significant as the reality itself. However, if it should be so, one might argue that the way our awakened mind tries to erase the dream is quite suspicious. Another interesting phenomenon is the fact that in our dreams we are fully satisfied with whatever happens to us, which is almost never the case in the awakened state to which we refer as our conscious realty. Finally, the author expresses the hope that the future will shed some light on these two states: dreaming and experiencing reality and will give us answers to many questions.

However, if we allow ourselves to submit fully to a dream we might find the most incredible things happening to us in our realities and realize the importance of dreams. This state of total submission is what we call "surrealism" and, as any other state of human mind it calls for the ways of expression.
