Divorce
Divorce
Divorce is annulment or dissolution of marriage, the declaration of the fact that the marriage is void. The process of divorce has long known history. It was known in antiquity and existed through entire history of civilization, though the attitude to it varied from culture to culture and from epoch to epoch. In the twentieth century, however, the issue of divorce has aggravated. The fall of nuclear family is more often accepted a commonplace in this day developed countries among which the United States, Canada, South Korea and the members of European Union bear the palm of superiority. More and more women decide to have children outside forming a two-parent family. The reasons for the destruction of family and the causes of divorce are the subject of analysis within the framework of current essay.
It was estimated that up to 50% of United States families end up in divorce today. In 2003, there were 7.5 new marriages per 1000 people compared to 3.8 divorces per 1000. (Divorce, 2006). The 1999 divorce poll, conducted by Barna Research Group in 48 states, uncovered that at the moment of survey 11% of the adult respondents were divorced and 25% had minimum one case of divorce in their life. The inquiry revealed that the least percentage of divorced or those who have been divorced was typical for the Northeast of United States with the total of 19%. The rest of the regions were almost equal in statistics: South and Midwest – 27% and the West – 26%. (Robinson, B. A., 2006). Living alone the data on race, denomination, age and other it is crucial to realize the causes of the divorce boom and the reasons of the destruction of the family.
Since the end of the World War 2 the United States and the world in its whole have suffered enormous cultural changes and unprecedented shifting of values. Especially for America the Vietnam War was one of the movers of cultural revolution and the reason for broken families. While the rate of divorces composed about 3% by 1965, it was about 50% in 1985. (Raffel, Lee, 2006).
The XX century changed the mind of people making them realize the outer world in different pattern than did their parents. It is still common in many young people to take the marriage for some magical perfect union which will come despite everything. The "me generation" representatives are critically concentrated on their own needs and desires and strikingly careless to those of others including their life-partners, which contributes greatly to growing misunderstanding and dissatisfaction in each other, and eventually leads to divorce.
The entire Western stile of life aims people at searching for gratification, material prosperity, accumulating wealth. The "I am" attitude to the surrounding destroys the sense of guilt or remorse, contributes to personal isolation and the lack of responsibility.
The concept of loyalty and its breach is also one of the reasons people want to divorce. In the modern world of sexual revolution there is little censure for disorderly relations. Since the morality and the societal opinion have lost their former importance for precise individual there is little deterrent to keep people from treasons and adultery. The general image of romantic marriage seems nowadays a fairytale, and the spouses who had multiple sexual relationships before the marriage find it really difficult to keep loyalty to one person for long time.
One aspect that contributes to the growth of number of divorces is the same pattern the young people have witnessed in their own parents. The lack of understanding and the inability to realize the true reasons of their actions and feelings bring people into the vicious circle of blaming others of inadequacy. The expectations the people have about the world and their marriage in particular often turn out to be erroneous. The unwillingness to perceive own mistakes and intrinsic problems often ends with insults and altercation in which people become the mere tools of own ruining emotionality generated by internal contradictions. (Raffel, Lee, 2006).
Nevertheless, while solving the problem of divorces and the destruction of family it is often taken for granted that the tendency is negative and the families should be saved and divorces banned. The desire to protect the cultural tradition of forming a family can, in its turn, lead to further misunderstanding and an attempt to "gap a round hole with a square cork". The institute of marriage exists to ease the life of people but not to force them to correspond to the tradition. This day actuality reveals the fact that the mass tendencies which arise in society can not be disregarded or banned just because they are in conflict with existing moral principles. It seems that the cultural and mental stereotypes can no more restrain people. The problem of divorces in one line with other social conflicts, like the legitimacy and morality of abortions, the growth of homosexuality, gay/lesbian marriages etc., makes questionable the values that people have been taken for granted for so long.
The key to the marriage crises, like the failing of sexuality between spouses, the conflict between the intrinsic desire for unknown and the social custom of keeping conjugal loyalty apparently lies in different cultural foundations and principles still unknown to traditional mental systems or pushed away by common western behavioral patterns.
